We all know the famous quote which says that all man needs to live is food, clothing and shelter. Well, I would like to update this quote to include one more item without which I think life might as well be considered dead. The phrase I think should say, that all man needs to live is food, clothing, shelter and meditation. Yes, meditation is the one item I think should be added to complete this phrase. This is because meditation is the tool with which to accomplish the true purpose of human birth, to find the Truth, to find God.
Meditation becomes possible when food, clothing and shelter are managed. Without these bare necessities it is very difficult to embrace a deep and significant meditation practice. A hungry man with hungry children is not thinking about watching his mind, he is contemplating the source of his next meal. For those of us though, who have these necessities attended to, there is no excuse for not starting a daily meditation practice.
Unfortunately, the wisdom above is not the prevalent thinking in society today. Today the objective is to accumulate more and more wealth, power, fame and fortune. The value system in place supports this attitude. The rich, famous and powerful are respected, adored and applauded. They are held in high esteem and considered the role models to be emulated. With this perspective attention is not turned to meditation and fulfilling man's highest destiny, with this perspective the direction is always self-aggrandization.
More, more, more would have been fine if at the end one could say, I am happy, satisfied and at peace. But, if one looks around, one finds that this is just simply not the case. All around there is misery, suffering, conflict, loneliness and dissatisfaction. The more, more, more never ends and no matter how much we get, we quickly get used to it and then want even more.
I have friends who are very rich. They have plenty of money and power, but I don't see them as rich at all. Inwardly they are very poor. They are unhappy, restless and stressed. No matter how much they seem to acquire, it never quenches their thirst for more. To me the answer is clear. Their life is missing meditation. Only with meditation can the thirst be quenched, only with meditation can peace be found, only with meditation can the true purpose of life be fulfilled.
To help see the truth of this one should closely inspect one's life. One needs to ask, if achieving the material goals one had set for oneself in the past brought lasting happiness. In inspecting one's life in this way one can learn about the direction that one has so far been taking and determine if it's worth continuing in that same way.
In addition, to self inspection, one should also learn from the lives of others. Observe those that do have and see if they are significantly more happy than those who don't. For this you may have to look past the image of happiness they might be presenting, for it is important for those who have a lot, to give the appearance that all is well. Dig a little deeper, go behind the scene a bit and out comes the misery, out comes the anguish, out comes the pain. Want to be joyful, wise and loving, then meditate.
If you have food, clothing and shelter, then that is enough. Stop chasing anything more and turn your attention inward. You have the potential to uncover the treasures within, and I am telling you that to dig up this hidden infinite wealth all you need is meditation.

Meditation - The Interesting Quirks of Access Samadhi
By E. Raymond Rock
Access Samadhi is a stage of meditation where interesting things can happen. It is the active gateway to fixed Samadhi. The danger with access Samadhi is that a meditator can become so engrossed with the unusual aspects of access Samadhi that they lose interest in going further.
The experiences during access Samadhi can generally be broken down into two areas - visions and phrases. All visions should be suspect, but occasional phrases may have some relevance and actually be significant teachings for an individual. Sometimes the phrases come from the subconscious memory where one may have read the phrase or heard it before, and it suddenly comes up during meditation. Other phrases are not so easy to explain, especially the ones that come across with immense authority.
The phrase that I'll never forget happened at the Zen Center in San Francisco during a seven-day sesshin. The forty-five minute meditation periods were going by in seemingly seconds, time was non-existent, and suddenly it was as if a loudspeaker went off in my head, "You are now completely healed." This happened just before I ended up in bed and seriously ill for three months, and I actually still feel the effects of it now 24 years later. Go figure.
Examples of other significant phrases I can recall were:
"The only difference between life and death is the breath."
"Be level, true and correct."
"Go deeper in the valley."
'The citta (mind) is ahead of the times."
"There are seeds to pick about but not talk about."
"Think deep, pure thoughts."
"You are it, all of it."
"The Ajna Chakra comes from warm sun."
"There is a difference between a material void and an immaterial void."
"The brain is dead."
Regarding visions; I recall four while meditating in Mckenna, Washington with Roshi Koshin. The first was three shafts of brilliant white light - a tall one, a short one, and a middle sized one - all surrounded by black space. Accompanying the vision came the substantial words; "We are watching over you." The second was where I saw myself on a footbridge over a pond. I had a fishing pole in my hand, and on the end of the line was a bobber. As I cast my line into the water, I noticed that the bobber was strange; a miniature replica of the earth. Immediately, I knew intuitively that from that moment on, I would only be playing with the world. The third involved a fishing boat where a smiling fish jumped from the water into my arms; and the fourth was a vision of a short piece of rope frayed on both ends, accompanied by the phrase, "You comes apart at the end."
At Shasta Abbey in California, again during access Samadhi, I had two past life experiences verified by a Roshi. They came up as incredible visions, like nothing I have ever experienced before. In the first one, which was in color, I was in a blazing desert standing on brilliant white steps with another monk. Immediately following this, the vision abruptly changed to me as a woman walking down a narrow street lined with 1930-40 era cars. This was in black and white.
These are just a smattering of the many visions and experiences that can come up in access Samadhi. What I would recommend is that if visions or phrases begin appearing for you (and they don't appear for everyone), I would suggest that you initially write them down. Keep a notebook by your side and simply record what is happening. Then as soon as you write them down, try to forget about them and return to your meditation. Although writing them down will temporarily distract you from going deeper, the experiences are so compelling and interesting that not writing them down or trying not to remember them is almost impossible. So, indulge yourself for awhile and record them. They are fun and sometime insightful to look back at later.
After you have accumulated a small collection of experiences, put your notebook away and begin letting go of each vision or phrase as it arises, regardless of how important it may seem. On one hand, this is difficult to do because they can be so profound, but on the other hand, none of them will take you into fixed Samadhi where the real work of consciousness shifts is done. In the end, if you don't discipline yourself and let the visions and phrases go, you will remain bogged down in the excitement of access Samadhi and never taste meditation's real potential.
Just as you learned to notice and then not become attached to thoughts, emotions, and feelings during meditation, regardless of their importance, you must eventually say goodbye to these unique and compelling visions and phrases as well. Otherwise, you will never get beyond this preliminary stage of meditation and approach enlightenment.

Origin of Meditation
By P. Wilson
Many people advocate meditation as a way to improve a person's emotional, mental, spiritual and even physical health. Meditation can be used as a way to ease anxiety, work through stress and depression and is often a way for the person to rest their body as well as their mind. Meditation is advocated among people who believe in a holistic approach to healing and mediation has been used to help people stop smoking, quit drinking, shake a drug habit, reduce blood pressure, reduce PMS symptoms and ease the symptoms of menopause.
History
Nobody is sure exactly how meditation began. It is well known that its history dates back hundreds of years, but nobody is sure of the exact origin of meditation. The earliest written record of meditation is found in five thousand year old Hindu scriptures. It occurs right around the first mentions of Buddha and it was not long before it began to be practiced all across Asia. Meditation has been worked into almost every spiritual belief and religious practice in the world, though it takes many forms and is done in a variety of different ways.
While Americans have known about meditation for many decades, it was not until the 1960s and 1970s that the practice found popularity. Meditation's popularity was spurred on by the many cultural icons who were exploring the Eastern traditions and practices (The Beatles had a very famous stay in India where they studied under a Maharishi). As it became more popular it began to be accepted as a form of holistic medicine and now it is commonly used to aide a person's healing process or help lower his or her stress levels.
Meditation Techniques
There are two major forms of meditation: concentrative meditation and mindfulness meditation. Concentration meditation focuses on a person's breathing as well as on a single object-a sound or an image-to encourage the mind to find a greater clarity and awareness. By quietly focusing on the object and the breath, a person will find that his or her mind readily opens up to invite in peace and the body starts to relax. Mindfulness meditation encourages a person to pay attention to all of the feelings and sensations they are feeling, but to feel them remotely. During mindfulness meditation, the person will be conscious of their thought patterns and will observe them objectively without allowing them to be caught up in the thoughts themselves.
Meditation is practiced all over the world and is done through two major methods. While the exact origin of meditation is unknown and the history of meditation is extremely varied, the practice is very popular and has been recognized by people all over the world as a beneficial practice.

Can You Really Meditate Like a Zen Monk at The Touch of a Button?
By Miller Rhodes
Is it really possible to reach Zen - like meditation by pushing a button? The short and quick answer to that question is yes. The longer answer of course involves the fact that you need to commit to it. The health benefits that you will receive from meditation include less stress, less anxiety, positive feelings and you will actually slow the aging process.
There have been numerous scientific studies that have shown conclusively that the claimed benefits one has from meditation are legitimate. Daily meditation can produce long lasting improvements in your immune system and in the electrical activity of the brain. In a study done at the University of Wisconsin, the researchers there found that people who meditate daily have 50% more activity in the left frontal area of the brain. This is the area of the brain that is responsible for positive emotions and reducing anxiety.
With this being said, it is time to explain to you how you can achieve this. Many people have heard of the "The Secret" and many of those people know the name Bill Harris. Bill Harris is one of the teachers who appears in the movie "The Secret," and is the founder and creator of a program that can legitimately change your life called Holosync. Holosync combines the practice of meditation and brainwave entrainment for life changing and life enhancing results.
Imagine having little to no stress in your life. The life you live right now, only with less feelings of irritability, anxiety, tension and stress. Holosync is not a magic pill, or book or audio program. It is a program that requires a commitment from you. You put in a CD, close your eyes, and listen every day for 30 minutes to an hour. Holosync is really more about you taking control of your life and you becoming the person you were meant to be.
If you have tried meditation before and stopped or bought into other self help programs and walked away because you never achieved the "nirvana" you have heard so much about you should investigate Holosync. This is not a new fly by night product. Holosync has helped thousands of people in the last 20 years and in over 170 countries improve their lives. Many people noticing a marked improvement after the first month.
This is a program that will help you achieve Zen like meditation, without dedicating hours a day to it for years. Imagine that instead of ten years from now you were feeling better; you could be feeling better in days or weeks. The best part is that you are not in this alone. Holosync also provides you with a support system to help guide you on your way to an improved quality of life. With so many people singing the praises of Holosync it is worth taking the time to look at it.
Personally I have been in the program for two months and I can tell you that there is something different going on inside me. When you start the program you are told that if you resist the positive changes the program is trying to make you will feel negative emotions such as anger and depression. You are doing this because you want change, so don't resist. While my emotions felt like they were all over the place for the first couple weeks, that passed and now I am grateful for this program and the positive changes that I am experiencing.

Sedona Method Emotions - Letting Go Of Your Emotions With The Sedona Method
By Trevor Johnson
The Sedona Method says that we go through a series of 9 different emotional states, often referred to as the Sedona Method emotions.
Here's a list of these states and some of the feelings that you're likely to experience when you're stuck in a particular state. You can use the Sedona Method questions to let go of these emotions.
Apathy
The lowest of the low. Generally speaking, you're so apathetic that you just can't be bothered to do anything. Kind of like the way a typical teenager is often depicted.
Grief
It takes more effort to grieve than to be apathetic. Even though many people would place this at the bottom of the list. We grieve when we have lost a loved one or something precious to us. It's good to grieve but eventually there comes a time when you need to move on, so releasing the grief is a good plan.
Fear
As you'd expect, this happens when you are afraid of something. As a child, it may be fear of the dark. As we get older, it's likely that it is fear of the unknown in one of its many manifestations. So you could be fearful about an upcoming examination or job interview. Anything that causes a change in our routine could lead to becoming fearful. When you release on this, you move up to the next emotional state:
Lust
Whether this is physical lust for another person or lusting after an item or object (that brand new LCD television, for instance) doesn't matter. What matters is that you recognize that being lustful isn't necessarily the best "place" for you to be in. As with all the other emotional states here, recognizing that you are experiencing them is often a large part of being able to release on them and let them go.
Anger
Grrrr! It takes quite a lot of effort to be angry for any length of time, which is why it's quite a long way into the list before we meet this. One of the problems with anger is that we will often vent it on other people. Which doesn't help them, even if we feel better for it. It's far better to let go of the angry feeling. Bottling up your anger has been shown to lead to other health problems, so let it drift out of your system.
Pride
This feeling borders on being "good". The trouble with pride is that we're often protective of the achievement and it's this kind of pride that can turn into a negative feeling.
Courageousness
This is the first really positive feeling on the list. Courage is good and the feeling of standing up to someone and not letting them brow beat you can be positively uplifitng.
Acceptance
Allow things to just "be". You accept that most things are good as they are. When you exist in a state of acceptance, you will start to feel calm and collected. Ready to let yourself go into the highest emotional state:
Peace
Tranquility is another word you could use for this. It's a blissful state and the feeling of elation when you get there is difficult to put into words - but you'll spot it immediately, I guarantee.

Theta Binaural Beats - Deep Brain Meditation
By Trevor Johnson
Binaural beats operate at different frequencies and are designed to quickly and easily take your brain into different states. Theta binaural beats are programmed to induce the patterns that your brain runs when it is in either deep sleep or a deep meditative state.
Binaural beats work by playing slightly different frequencies into your ears. When your brain tries to resolve the minor difference between the two beats you're hearing, they take you quickly and effortlessly into the brainwave level that you've decided to listen to.
In case you want to program your own, the frequency range for Theta is between 4 and 7 Hz.
Various trials have shown that this level encourages your brain to make the "feel good" things called endorphins.
One of the other reasons for choosing the theta level when you consider buying a binaural beats MP3 is that they are generally considered to help with learning. Studies have also shown that people listening to them on a regular basis find that they need less sleep - reports vary from between one and four hours less, depending on the person.
Because the theta frequency level is associated with dreaming, you may well come across them when you are searching for items to help you dream - whether that's lucid dreaming or just the quest to banish sleepless nights.
Theta level binaural beats are also associated with increases in memory as well as learning that was mentioned earlier. Because of the way they operate, this can help you to learn topics when other methods haven't been successful.
Research shows that children spend a lot more time with their brains in a theta state than adults do. Which helps to explain why children can soak up information as though they were a sponge, whereas adults can often take longer. It's kind of the same as the saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Maybe the equivalent in humans is at least in part to do with a lower level of theta brainwave activity.
You may also come across binaural beat MP3s and CD that use the alpha brainwave level for learning - this works as well as the theta level. So don't panic if you come across different levels of brainwave entrainment being used to the same thing.
Quite a lot of the experiments to prove the effectiveness of binaural beats have been done by an organization called the Monroe Institute. They tend to combine their use with other systems, such as hypnosis.
One thing to be aware of if you are buying any sort of audio with binaural beats included is that the compression used should be as low as possible. Technologies such as MP3 are designed to compress file sizes by cutting out parts of recordings that we don't normally listen to. Typically this includes things such as binaural beats. So you need to make sure that you're getting what you think you're purchasing. It's often better to wait a few days for a CD to arrive but if the download you're looking at is large, chances are that it will also be uncompressed.
